The weight of a toxic relationship further compounded her difficulties, as those around her insisted that “art is not a job” and doubted her ability to succeed.
Despite these hardships, MoNique never let go of her passion for art.
After returning to South Africa from a difficult period in Emmen, she began to rebuild her life and her confidence. She embraced her identity as an artist, likening herself to a rose—beautiful and elegant, yet resilient with thorns. This metaphor became a central theme in her work, celebrating the strength and beauty inherent in femininity.
